An intrepid group of ten Scouts and their leaders from 1st Midsomer Norton C Troop spent a weekend last month camping, hiking and exploring the delights of the breathtaking and jaw-dropping views of the Jurassic coastline at Lyme Regis in Dorset.
The Scouts took part in team-building activities, cooked delicious breakfasts and navigated themselves, and their leaders, along the stunning Jurassic Coastline in glorious sunshine from Seatown up and over the highest point on the south coast – Golden Cap, successfully and safely bypassing immense landslips. They arrived back at Charmouth in record time, having managed numerous steep climbs and drops, returning back to Lyme Regis for a traditional fish and chip supper. After a small campfire on Saturday night, they awoke on the Sunday to torrential rain, but this did nothing to dampen their enthusiasm and actually helped them find their own small fossils, plus some enormous ammonites on the beach at low tide.
Midsomer Norton Scouts, in common with other troops across the UK, offer adventurous, fun and challenging activities both indoors and outdoors, with many varied items forming part of their programme. These range from team games, international cooking challenges, caving, motor mechanics, electrical safety, first-aid training, camping, fire lighting, crazy wide-games, night hikes, swimming, climbing/abseiling and canoeing/kayaking, usually with an annual week-long summer camp.
Above all, Scouting prides itself on friendship and teamwork; achieving the aims of the Scout Association by delivering to young people opportunities for them to achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals: as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.
