Scouting in Wansdyke is organised at two levels; Groups, who are geographically based around towns and villages within the District, and the District which covers the management of Groups and District Explorer Units in North East Somerset. Scout Groups are individual Charities and are fairly autonomous, with the District Leaders and Executive ensuring that the Groups operate within Scouting rules and guidelines. District The Scout District is managed by the District Commissioner, Janet Turner, with the support of Assistant District Commissioners, District Leaders, and the District Executive Committee. The Scout District is a registered charity. Explorer Scout Units are relatively new, and these are managed at District level by the District Explorer Scout Commissioner, Ian Carter. Although these are individually managed, are based with Groups and are sometimes attached to a Group, they are a District Unit. Confused? read more here. Groups Scout Groups are managed by Group Scout Leaders, supported by a team of leaders, and the Group Executive Committee, who make up the trustees of each Groups' registered charity. Groups can be Air, Sea or Land Scouts, although in Wansdyke all the Groups are Land Scouts, but this doesn't stop the Scouts taking part in Air and Sea activities. As Groups are geographically based, they normally have a catchment area, this is more to prevent wasted effort on recruiting than firm rules on where a young person should do their Scouting. Young people are free to select the Group that they would like to belong to, so they can join with friends that they know, or for any other reason - such as being on a convenient bus route. Trivia: Why is there a 2nd Clutton, and no 1st Clutton? When a Group closes down, for what ever reason, it is not re-started. So when 1st Clutton closed during world war 2, it finished then, and when it was restarted after the war, it became 2nd Clutton. Sometimes you will find a 2nd or 3rd group, and its because there was once a 1st group operating, but this has closed. |
