HOW TO JOIN

how to join

Introduction

There are many reasons for wanting to join Scouting. The adventure, the fun and games, learning skills, or even just something to do! But to get the most out of Scouting there are some things that parents and carers should consider in selecting the right section and Group to to join. Once you have read this page, and looked around the website, you should contact the group that you would like to  join, as each Group has its own joining procedure.

Select Appropriate Section

Each section - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Explorer Scouts have a target age group. If you child is at the top end of these age groups, it might be worthwhile to have a discussion with a leader to find out whether you should consider the older section.

Identify Local Groups

You will find the details of all the local Scout groups in Wansdyke District (North East Somerset) on this website. You should be able to easily find your local group.

Waiting Lists

Many groups have waiting lists. This is often because a particular group is popular, but it can equally be because of a shortage of leaders. Sometimes this means that membership may be on condition that parents take an active part in helping the group such as helping with supervision, or by joining the executive committee. There will be a leader in charge of the waiting list, and they can normally tell you how long the wait is likely to be.

Things to Consider

  • Costs: Some Groups include lots of activities for the subs paid, other may charge for all additional activities. Find out the cost of the last summer camp, and get a copy of the programme with costs for additional activities .This will be a good indication of what it will cost for an average school term. Some groups also have a joining fee. This is to cover costs such as badges, membership books and administrative costs.

  • Waiting List: While this is a good indication of a good, well run section, it can also mean that you child can miss out on up to a years Scouting.

  • Activities: A good section will have regular activities in addition to evening meetings. The programme will give an indication of this.

  • Locality / Schools: A group in the catchment area of the school that your child attends will normally have members from the school. Scouting can be much more fun when a member has friends to do activities with. Alternatively, it is a good place to make new friends!
